Kinds of Love

Calvary – image from pixabay.com

1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV

Let all that you do be done in love.

Love as it is used in the English Language is an over used all recompensing term covering everything from hamburgers , sex and platonic friendship.  The New Testament was written in Greek and the Greek Language does a much better job conveying which Love a person is referring to:

For example:

  • – images from pixabay.com

Eros, or sexual passion. The first kind of love was eros, named after the Greek god of fertility, and it represented the idea of sexual passion and desire. …

  • – images from pixabay.com

    Philia, or deep friendship. …

  • – images from pixabay.com

    Ludus, or playful love. …

  • – images from pixabay.com

Agape, or love for everyone. …

  • – images from pixabay.com

    Pragma, or longstanding love. …

  • Self-love – images from pixabay.com

Philautia, or love of the self.

Many words for love.

SEE THIS PAGE:  http://www.hipgreece.com/the-ancient-greeks–6-words-for-love.html

When we refer to GOD’s Love it is the best Love of all and it is “unconditional”. When we falter we can easily be forgiven because of GOD’s all encompassing incomparable Love. This is so though Earthly consequences may still follow.  When Jesus secured our eternity in Heaven by dying for all sin in all time, it is only applied when we trust and accept Him.

John 3:16 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

The Word of GOD describes love lie this:

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 ESV

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

The Only Thing We Can Say is GOD is LOVE

Will he or she lead you to good, evil, life or death? Do they appeal to this temporal life: pleasure, riches and luxury. Or, do they lead you to eternal life with GOD? There is much wisdom accumulated from the most ancient of times but not all pertains to your eternal welfare.  Maybe it is just good for a time ; the time of our lifetime.

Why not avoid some of life’s painful lessons by giving your parents,  teachers, elders and religious mentors a listening to.  Why not closely pay attention to the wisdom of the Bible – GOD’s Word. Stories, parables, allegorical example and literal truth from thousands of years of experience but, more important, from GOD.

My first extensive reading of the Bible was Proverbs and followed by Ecclesiastes.

Proverbs 12:15 ESV

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Proverbs 19:20 ESV

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.

No, at first I did not understand it well nor did I get the messages however, when calamity overwhelmed me and GOD got my attention I accepted Jesus.  From that moment The Holy Spirit helped me to understand and change.  Christians seemed to appear from nowhere and they helped me is so many ways.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-22 ESV

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; …

This implied to me, if I asked for a special consideration as a brother in Christ something was not right. The business person either was charging non-Christians too much or, if I obtained a special discount it was at their personal expense – coming out of what they needed for themselves and their family.

A long struggle with an illness or injury may afford

. . . ample time to prepare for our demise, but what if we fall victim to a violent death: accident, natural disaster, explosion or even at the hands of another? Would you be confident of your eternal future? Sometime in this world GOD allows a physical struggle because our response can illustrate to others our faith. We are in this world but not of this world; we in our own abilities cannot correct the evil and the wrongs; only GOD can.  We can demonstrate GOD’s Love and teach others to share the hope we have and, the assured eternal salvation.

Apostle Paul (ST Paul) atests to this condition:

2 Corinthians 12:7 ESV

Thorns are Painful – images from pixabay.com

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

The darkness around Earth in this photo is a metaphor for the evil that surrounds us in the spiritual struggle.

Surrounded – images from pixabay.com

It is a Spiritual War played out in the flesh

Crusaders – images from pixabay.com

The Crusades were ill-conceived and therefore wrongly prosecuted because people did not fully understand the true nature of the war between good and evil – or ignored the truth.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ESV

Spiritual Warrior – images from pixabay.com

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

So we may wonder how someone could slay those children in such a hideous way; why destroy life for small material gain? Abuse helpless people? Cheat those dying in a famine. Murder because they are different in appearance? The value of life so cheap? The reason behind all of it is an ongoing spiritual war:

Ephesians 6:12 ESV

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Then what can we do?

Ephesians 6:11 ESV

Metaphor for Spiritual War Prep – images from pixabay.com

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

The Word of GOD is our weapon and our protection.

Old Bible – images from pixabay.com
As Christians we are to be the light to the world as Jesus said:

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

What makes us Christians? Part IV

The last segment of the core tenets of Christianity require more study than what I can provide in my blog.  If you want to know more or have trouble understanding these I suggest a Bible study or at least a quality study guide; one (of many) such book is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Grudem

16. Justification and Adoption

Romans 5:1 ESV

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Oprhans – images from pixabay.com

Romans 9:8 ESV

This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

17. Heaven

Heaven – images from pixabay.com

John 14:2 ESV

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

18. Final Judgment

Judgement – images from pixabay.com

Revelation 20:11-12 ESV

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.

19. What is Sanctification and Perseverance?

Baptism of Christ – images from pixabay.com

1 Thessalonians 4:3 ESV

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;

Perseverance – images from pixabay.com

Galatians 6:9 ESV

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

20. What will happen when Jesus returns?

Jesus Returns – images from pixabay.com

Matthew 24:36 ESV

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

1 Corinthians 15:52 ESV

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

I hope these four blog posts encourage you as a Christian to study GOD’s Word: go to church, go to Sunday School, attend Bible Study or read commentaries. If you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ I encourage you to do so now.

Share the Word . . . Christian revival can help turn the trends toward evil back. Thank You.

All of us have faced challenges or will in our lifetime, how will you cope with them?

Drug Addiction – images from pixabay.com

Christians are not immune to calamity, injury, loss, illness and death, why? How do Christians claim to be at peace in the most trying circumstances? How is it that some Christians are able to even face death without loosing their faith? (all Christians are saved even if they falter in their last hours.)

Jesus – images from pixabay.com

First: They (Christians) have eternity guaranteed by Jesus.

John 5:24 ESV

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Wisdom

Second: God uses worldly challenges in order to demonstrate grace and faith to the unsaved; the power of Christians when tempted to yield has a limit.

2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me

Prostitution- image from pixabay.com

Last: All people are tempted to sin in the same way – this includes Christians denying Christ under threat – this is why everyone needs GOD and can see GOD in eternity when trusting in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

GOD is Good – images from pixabay.com

Having Christ sets you on a path to recovery now and for eternity. Life will not be perfect but it will be better.

Romans 8:28 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

The Nature of Rebellion

(click title to enable comment space at the bottom)
Cain and Abel
Doing Wrong like His Parents – images from pixabay.com

It is a common expectation that as humans leave childhood behind and approach adulthood we question, test and often rebel.

Rebellion: Day One – images from pixabay.com

The quest to influence life from our emerging person-hood based on what we know (or think we know) is natural; the questioning and expressing what we believe to be correct and even new is good as long as it is done with respect for our elders and GOD.

Older People Can Advise Best – images from pixabay.com

Ignoring what our elders know and, have drawn from life’s experiences may seem trite, incorrect, motivated by blind obedience or just passe’ but remember they have learned from actual experience. In the best situations the adolescent soon to become an adult, emerges with little harm to him or her self or to others but, that is not always so:

1 Kings 12:6 ESV

Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”  …

He Rejected the advice of the old men; instead relied on advice of young men (his peers).

1 Kings 12:8

But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. …

Wave of Rejection – images from pixabay.com
If you read the whole story you will learn his decision ended up being a disaster.

Change Before Wisdom – images from pixabay.com
Many times it seems we humans rather learn from the mistakes we ourselves make (the hard way), then from the wisdom given by our elders (the easy way).

The Old Testament Book of Judges Reveals this pattern clearly: Ignore GOD suffer consequences then return to GOD;

Ignore GOD suffer consequences then return to GOD;

Ignore GOD suffer consequences then return to GOD;

over and over . . . .

Revenge: The Cycle of Death

(click title to enable comment space at the bottom)
Revenge – images from pixabay.com

Revenge or Forgive?

Romans 12:19 ESV

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

We Christians are like any other human beings if we are wronged or injured by another we have an upwelling of animosity that if left uncontrolled can lead us to take revenge: deliver harm to the perpetrator or their associates. The above verse points to a higher order response: let GOD handle it. Easy to say but hard to do.

Sometimes it takes a Christian response to end a cycle of  violent reprisals

Cycles of War – images from pixabay.com

The infamous feud between the Hatfields and McCoys in the West Virginia Kentucky areas in the USA is well know.  Adolf Hitler’s obsession to take revenge on the several of the World’s Nations for inflicting what the German people viewed as too harsh a price to pay for agreeing to end World War I.  That obsession to inflict more than vengeance but to dominate other people and even the plan to annihilate some  lead to the most widespread destruction and death toll the World had ever experienced.  Could all that anguish and misery been avoided if the following verses were to have been applied?

Trust GOD to Deliver Justice – images from pixabay.com

Romans 12:17-21 ESV

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Oppressed, enslaved, conquered?

Non Violent Leaders – images from pixabay.com
Know History but Forgive and Move on
Gandhi, Dr. King and Mandela all understood all too well to give their respective people the best chance for peaceful and productive future was to work diligently at ending a cycle of violence by embracing a non-violent philosophy.

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
