Provincial America

After all that the Hebrews experienced during Exodus and beyond who would expect these people to break up into separate Nations.

After living 400 years in Egypt the Hebrew people descended from a favored people living in Egypt to a lower slave class.  Moses instructed by GOD to confront Pharaoh and secure their freedom. A favorite story from the Bible resulted in their eventual release but freedom came at a cost: for spiritual failure and sin (even Moses was not to enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience), the freed generation wandered for forty years in the wilderness. After all these trials and tribulations when the 12 tribes entered the land lead by Joshua one would think these people would be permanently bound to each other into one indivisible nation; this only lasted for a time. Eventually for many reasons born of human imperfection The United Kingdom of Israel broke into Israel in the north and Judah in the south.  Yes even people in direct contact with GOD are flawed.  What hope can there be for all the people of the Earth agreeing on what is right and wrong since differences has divided us into so many countries and nations?

The Hebrews became Israel and Judah is it possible for the United States of America to break apart into several separate nations?

1 Kings 12 (ESV)

13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him, 14 he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people . . . .

16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents . . .

You can read all the details concerning the Kingdom dividing into Israel and Judah if you visit the Bible and read 1 Kings 12 for your self.

It was a surprise when The Berlin Wall came down and The Soviet Union Dissolved and also when Britain decided to leave the European Union.

I once believed gradual unification of the entire planet was possible now I am not even sure the United States will always remain united.

If you live long enough life on planet Earth will yield some unexpected events and developments: in my lifetime I never expected the U.S.S.R. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ruled by Russia) to dissolve.  More recently I never expected that the United Kingdom’s people would vote to leave the E.U (European Union).  I came to believe the the unity and economic success of The United States of America was so desirable and so emulated that eventually the whole world would imitate us.  Looks like I was wrong.

The rise and fall of empires and nations will probably continue until Lord Jesus returns and the transformation to The Kingdom of GOD is accomplished.

There are accounts of Empires ending, the weak rising up and the might falling within the Bible . . . here is an example:

Jeremiah 50:1-46 ESV

The word that the Lord spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet: “Declare among the nations and proclaim, set up a banner and proclaim, conceal it not, and say: ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.’ “For out of the north a nation has come up against her, which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; both man and beast shall flee away. “In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, weeping as they come, and they shall seek the Lord their God. They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’ …

Children in the school yard are adept at detecting overly conciliatory and duplicitous behaviour. Sincerity and loyalty make for great friendships, even lasting for life. So, it seems we almost, if not actually, know how to judge each other’s sincerity instinctively. In past times when life was even more precarious then it is today this ability could have life or death implications.

If we change our allegiance for any understandable reason and are willing to take the consequences for our action, this may not always result in being correct but at least it can be said we were true to our conviction (wrong or right).  The Word of GOD has guidance sufficient to cover what we can expect to encounter in life: why not use the wisdom?

Proverbs, Psalms and more from The Word of GOD offers insight and advice concerning human behaviour.

Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

Psalm 120:2 ESV

Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.

Proverbs 26:24-26 ESV

Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

Right Left Neither: What GOD Says

Yes we live in a worlds dominated and complicated by humans.  Now that many people are educated, living in urban areas and affected greatly by politics there is a need to help keep ideas and policies understandable. Since not all people are able to digest subtle differences in these issues a number of devices have emerged to attempt to help them. The terms “right” and “left” represent a package of ideas that summarize what each faction believes in and what their agendas are.  If you (like me) try to sort through the information and make a choice based on who seems the most capable leader you probably discovered it take a lot of work.  And, we must compromise and make the best choice we can because it is rare that any candidate represents our beliefs in their entirety.  It seems to have worked reasonably well here in the United States up until now but, in these current times we must wade through much disinformation and often there are questions of trust as well.

Not Interested? – image from pixabay.com

The complex situation tempts us to take the easy way and just latch on to the political faction we like because, we like the leadership, it is a family tradition or we do not want to dig deeper into the implications nor the consequences if these people gain power.

Toil and Work

Why Toil and Work is Part of Life

Miner – image from pixabay.com
Worker’s Hands – image from pixabay.com

Toil is work but work doesn’t have to be toil. When Adam and Eve were living in the Garden of eden GOD told them to care for it – probably for them it was not work but joy.

Genesis 2:15 ESV

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

Soon Adam needed a helper and GOD created Eve for him.

Genesis 2:18,21,22 (ESV)

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for[a] him.”. . .

. . .  21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[d]into a woman and brought her to the man. . . .

Nearly everyone knows eventually Satan disguised as a serpent tempted them and the disobeyed GOD and sinned and then ejected from The Garden of Eden: one of the consequences was humans would have to earn their keep through work and toil.

Genesis 3:17-19 ESV

17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

Sweat – image from pixabay.com

19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Like many things in this world people can either make the most out of a situation or succumb to it by making reality harsh by magnifying the negative side:

Outside Worker – image from pixabay.com

People can chose to seek GOD’s will for them and thus discover a vocation well suited for who they are. This is a gift from GOD for an obedient and respectful life.

Proverbs 12:11 ESV

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.

Work yes, in the proper measure to provide and be productive but, not in excess in order to gain worldly treasure at your spiritual expense.

Give Thanks – image from pixabay.com

Like any aspect of this world humans can succumb to excesses: in desires, substance abuse, material gain, wealth and even live a life completely consumed by work in order to fulfill their perversion  of a balance mental condition and reality.  Yes, even a good thing like diligent work can become a negative distortion in our lives.

Psalm 127:2 ESV

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.

 Samson and Delilah

Judges 16:15 ESV

And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me where your great strength lies.”

1 Kings 11:1-4 ESV

Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.

2 Samuel 11:1-27 ESV

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” …

Many People Criticize the Way Life Is

Are you among the people who find fault in the way we are living? In your town, State, country,  . . . even the world?  A serious impediment for positive change lies within ourselves: we can be ignorant of an issue, blinded by our preference or stubborn in not accepting evidence.  No, right now I am not going to heap on more excuses, complaints nor criticisms of what people believe or do; instead I will point out a way to circumvent points of contention by making a simple suggestion: do something positive that makes contemporary life better.

Healthcare – image from pixabay.com
Needs – image from pixabay.com

All of us can contribute to positive change.

Recently I watched television segments of several newscasts the ended their broadcast on a positive note; the most significant stories were about how children recognized a problem and did something to help others who were in need.

Orphans – image from pixabay.com

Collecting, donations, items to send to needy people and similar actions.  The amazing thing? These children did this completely on their own (at least when they originated the action(s)).  I felt awkward and perhaps you may have also knowing, that a child rose to an occasion when a need was identified and apparently the need was missed or ignored by adults.

Jesus said the needy will always be with us (my paraphrase).

Matthew 26:11 ESV

For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.

It seems to me that evil is ever present as the news heaotheresdlines indicate;  yet the people of the world have somehow managed to do more than survive. Accepting a person or idea humans tend to need to see a face before making a choice.

I could not, see myself casting a vote for a candidate I never have seen, marrying a woman without meeting her first or even accepting a controversial or difficult concept without scrutinizing the presenter. This appears to be a common trait shared by most people.  Looking through history books I discover many portraits and even busts and statues of important people (real or mythological).

We recall fondly a time when more good prevailed in our days than bad and, our mind mercifully contributes by diminishing the negatives more each day. AS we relive fond moments we reinforce the pleasantness of a past time while dimming the less than pleasant (or down right horrible) experiences we once had.

GOD mercifully seems to have given us this ability.

The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs: Photography Collection, The New York Public Library. “The Old Constitution training ship, Boston harbor, Mass., U.S.A.” New York Public Library Digital Collections. The ability to lessen negatives in our pasts helps us to get over the ill feelings: broken hearts are healed; grief fades into fond memories of a loved one; devastating mistakes are transformed into learning experiences.  This process is true and will happen if we let it. One very helpful tool that has been given to us by GOD is the Bible.

The Holy Bible teaches us about real people and real experiences in life and, gives us hope for the future.

Some Bible Verses:

The Past

Isaiah 43:25 ESV

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.

The Now

Psalm 118:24 ESV

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Hebrews 13:5 ESV

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The Future

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Matthew 6:31-34ESV

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Mrs. Jones hesitated outside s a supermarket right after getting some needed food  . . . she looked at the Salvation Army bucket . . . then she took the 93 cents from her purse and put it all in: it was all she had and except for a thank you and a Merry Christmas from the faux Santa no one noticed.  She gave all she had and only got a good feeling in return.

Mark 12:41-44 ESV

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
