“Trust, but verify (RussianДоверяй, но проверяйDoveryai, no proveryai) is a Russian proverb. The phrase became well known in English when used by President Ronald Reagan on multiple occasions in the context of nuclear disarmament.”*

All humans will fail you eventually – at least statiscically.

Psalm 40:4 ESV

Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!

In our daily lives there are some tips on trust:

Proverbs 3:5 ESV

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

You will do well if you trust GOD and others  who trust GOD.

Trust in those who uphold GOD’s Standard

People who honor GOD’s standards are less likely to disappoint you or violate your trust.  Christians know they can stumble so they are willing to make corrections and admit errors.

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Who will you trust today?

Why not start with trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Mark 5:36 ESV

But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”

Holiness

What is Holiness and who can be Holy?

Even the best humans have the seeds of corruption within them so can any human claim to be holy? Well, it is a relative process; we Christians do not but into many things that are described as relative.

For instance, while all killing is not murder, murder is murder period. We do kill animals, fish and birds for food. We do not attempt to qualify murder by saying, “The slaying was murder-like.” for example.  Yes in a war things get all messed up, because all people Christians included, seek ways to justify what goes on by claiming they are right and justified.  Defending one’s family in a war or criminal situation seems clear to many but, not even that is accepted by all – war or self defense is a last resort. So how can people ever agree who is holy and how to become holy?

Leviticus 11:45 ESV

For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

Acts 2:38 ESV

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

GOD is Holy. Jesus is Holy. The Holy Spirit also.

We can become an improved version of ourselves by becoming more Christ-Like every day thus moving  from the starting place as “sinner” toward a saved person – saved by GOD’s Grace – eliminating sins as we are convicted of them. So, after all, since even as a “Saved Christian” we are not sin free here on Earth but we are set apart (more holy less sinful) and by accepting Jesus as Lord, GOD does not see our sin because of Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection; we are counted as “HOLY” even now.

The explanation is contained in the Bible.

1 Peter 1:13-25 ESV

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, …

An important distinctions between holy, sacred, sanctified and saint may arise when discussing holiness: see the following website on usage in the English Language:

Persecution and Martyrs Still Exists

Why are Christians persecuted?

Heros – images from pixabay.com

Fire purifies precious metals . . . There is an old saying “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” Persecuted, people for race, creed, religion or political view only makes them more determined to defy their persecutors.

2 Timothy 3:12 ESV

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

Many books, movies and television programs rely on this trait of human nature for dramatic plots. While unlike the movies the hero and the underdog do not always emerge victorious in this life.

Acts 7:59 ESV

And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

The Christian Experience is one story where the people overcame the hostilities and not only survived but became one of the worlds most successful religions.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 ESV

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

Yes we all are subject to worldly SUFFERING but being a CHRISTIAN helps

GOD has alluded to good results if people are obedient but the Bible also depicts humans as not capable of perfect obedience; the history of the Hebrews offers examples of success and good fortune but then, failure and calamity.

1 John 1:8 ESV

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

The new testament makes it clear how to gain eternal life and, how to have a life as good as possible right now. But,

There is no guarantee that all will go well all the time.  There is no such thing as a prosperity Gospel. The suffering of Christians is most often an opportunity for demonstrating we maintain our faith because our hope is in eternity with GOD. Our testimony can, and does, show non Christians how our faith works here and now because we hold fast to it though we are in the world with its imperfection as we yearn to be with Jesus in Heaven in GOD’s presence.

Romans 5:3-4 ESV

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,

Praying to Whom

Judges 10:14 ESV

Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.”

Does it matter to whom they are praying? All major religions and probably many off shoots claim to pray to “The True GOD or gods” but who can be sure that they are correct?

Philippians 4:6 ESV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

As a Christian I have one “rule of thumb”: Did the GOD I pray to reach out to humans and generate a relationship with us or does the god require we blindly adhere to rote prescriptions and proscriptions? The GOD I worship came to us. Old Testament and New relate the whole story; Jesus paid for all sin when he was crucified and died but then he arose to take the place as redeemer for all.

Risen Jesus Christ – images from pixabay.com

We christians understand there is nothing we can do to achieve salvation apart from accepting that Jesus Christ paid the penalty for all sin. He paid for sin with His life instead of us, and how do we know when we have sinned? GOD provided the information about our condition, “The Law” that we cannot keep to make it clear to us we cannot keep it and Jesus as our Advocate to make a way for us to eternal salvation in Heaven. Jesus instructed us to pray to GOD in His Name.

Luke 11:1-54 ESV

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:  (Our)“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, …

So I am not going to say you are praying to a false god or an absent god, only this, if you want to be certain of just whom you are praying to and what your eternity will be, consider investigating what information GOD has given in The Holy Scripture.
