Discernment

Why is acquiring Discernment so important?

1 John 4:1 ESV

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Out in the “The Real World” I heard it said as a child or student it is like (blank). Unfortunately while this may suggest making a mechanical thing work it can, also point to a darker side of life. We (all not just Christians) must prepare our children for real life dangers along with an optimistic portrayal of life beyond the cocoon of family, church or school – when these places live up to the best humans can offer of course.  Some children learn all too soon some of life’s uglier side at home or close to home. For the majority I hope the collective nest in childhood is loving and nurturing. As a student of history, humans and what the Bible says about good and evil, we do not do our young a favor by shielding them for too long and too tight a loving grip: in some way we must alert them just what is “The Real World” as we teach them tolerance and how to love thy neighbor as thy self.

1 Kings 3:9 ESV

Give your servant (the writer) therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”

A good place to start is revealed in these two verses . . . and many more in GOD’s Word.

Romans 12:2 ESV /

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

James 1:5 ESV /

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
