A Wonderful Feeling That Lasts Forever?
N0; a nice sentiment but only GOD has a forever kind of love . Sure it is a wonderful feeling to love and be loved at an emotional level. As part of the way humans select mates and procreate does not have to meet our notion of romantic love however. The following Wikipedia gives a nice overview of the topic and how we as a society have come to view a romantic relationship and what we have come to expect from one.
Before I go any further I must emphasize the Unconditional Love GOD has for us is the ultimate standard for us to strive for.
The notion of romantic love that predominantly has revolved around the relationship between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation, is an added benefit that helps people survive the hardships of life and furnishes continuity to one’s lifetime. When the biblical story of Abram (Abraham) and Sarai (Sarah) reaches the point when they in old age have their son named Isaac, I believe they had remained together for the many years she was without child because their Love for each other was the glue that cemented their relationship.
Genesis 21:2 ESV
And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.
When Isaac came of age and it was his time to marry and start a family though, there was the element of arrangement about his marriage that trumped his personal feelings of love for Rebekah; he seemed to fall in love with her upon meeting her. Since he needed her father’s permission to wed he wound up working for his father in law for forty years before he was given permission to marry her. He had to marry her sisters and work for his father in law in order to earn that right: that certainly indicates that he had a great love for Rebekah in my opinion despite the practical and business aspects of marriage.
Genesis 25:20 ESV
And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.
So what is a young christian man or woman to do when the time comes for them to wed and begin a family?
First pray, second be well versed in the standards of GOD from GOD’s WORD and, diligently seek the council of mature Christians when considering this question.
THe short answer:
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
The long answer:
Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. …
